In the far future the developments of technology, artificial intelligence and engineering led to the creation of robotic personal companions, “Mechatoms” that possess the ability to deploy military-grade explosives and weaponry. After a series of cataclysmic wars, civilisations fell victim to their own hubris and all traces of it wiped itself out, leaving behind the Mechatoms with nothing to do. What does a machine designed for destruction do when there is no prime directive left?

With their new gained freedom, the Mechatoms had a cultural revolution, developed their own personalities, appearances and motives. The fighting continues, but this time as a form of personal competition! Fling bombs, fire rockets and defeat your competitors in this fast-paced wreck room!

📝 Concept

Ka-boom Battleroom! is a free-to-play multiplayer battle game where you compete for the highest score by causing havoc with bombs and rockets, defeating other players and damaging the destructible physics-based environments.

KBR takes inspiration from the 💣Bomberman series which has traditionally been a top-down maze-style game with grid-based environments. Project KBR reenvisages this baseline by having the player control in a full 3D environment that is both destructive, malleable and interactive.

Further stylistic inspirations are being derived from 1980's-90's Mecha-Animes, as well as Splatoon with its creative and supremely stylish cultured game worlds with musical bands and anarchy.

🕹️ Gameplay

KBR is being designed to support both casual and competitive playstyles simultaneously. Being a Battle game it is inherently competitive, however games may be easily joined and departed at any stage to fit in with the current play-meta on the platform (Roblox).

Each player has access to two core weapons. Both are versatile and offer varying attack styles.

💣 Bomb

The staple of CQB. These can instantly take out a player within close range. Bombs have a risk-reward mechanic where you can hold & cook the fuse to time it to explode on landing, just don't overcook it and explode yourself!

  • Short-range throw

  • Timed fuse!

  • Can hold & cook bomb

🚀 Rocket Launcher

The rocket is deployed from the player's mechanical arm and is fast to deploy, soars through the air in a straight line until it collides. This is your go-to when a player is out of reach, or you need something to tell a player to back off quickly.

  • Long-distance

  • Quick to use

  • Weak explosion damage

🎶 Music

A huge part of the cultural revolution for the Mechatoms is through music. Similar to how Splatoon has its own rich fantastical but grounded world full of unique in-game bands, KBR has various characters that make up to represent musician groups of various genres. These designs are very much a work in progress, but here's a slice of some of the tracks to be listened to.

An emo-rock / alt-rock band of four including two lead singer/guitarists, bassist and drummer. Inspired by the likes of MCR, PTV - and name in reference to Muse!

Previously slave to the rhythm in the largest night club of the system, renegaDe was vehemently put down when displaying any signs of individuality. As a result of the abuse, it is no longer able to talk due to a damaged language processing unit, but is free to be a DJ prodigy under its own guise.

The Oddjobs are a misfit group of various Mechatoms that in their previous lives had vastly differing jobs. Delivery? Yes. Street cleaner? Yes. Sidekick to an undercover cartel? That too. (This also allows me to assign random tracks that I make to this band if I have no clue who it would fit).

The tracks are being composed by me in Cubase and utilise various vox-like synths as well as vocoding on audio files to represent the Mechatoms 'singing' in a robot-like voice.
